Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, delivered a commanding performance in the first leg of their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final qualification series, defeating Algeria 4-0 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on Saturday.
The match kicked off with explosive intensity as Queen Joseph opened the scoring just 43 seconds in—catching the Algerian side completely off guard. Nigeria continued to pile on the pressure, with Zainab Raji doubling the lead in the 13th minute. Four minutes later, Queen Joseph struck again to claim her second of the day and put the Flamingos 3-0 up by the 17th minute.
Algeria struggled to contain the fluid attacking play and disciplined pressing of the Nigerian side throughout the match. Despite some resistance in the second half, the Flamingos remained dominant. Their persistence paid off once more in the 90th minute when Aishat Animashaun added a fourth goal, sealing a comprehensive victory for Nigeria.
The win puts the Flamingos in a strong position ahead of the second leg, which will take place on Friday, April 25th, at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida, Algeria. With a 4-0 aggregate advantage, the team is now just one step away from qualifying for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, scheduled for October 17 to November 8, 2025.This year’s edition marks a historic expansion to 24 teams, with Africa allotted five slots, including host nation Morocco. The Flamingos’ performance not only reflects their determination to be among the continent’s representatives but also showcases their growing stature in global women’s football.
