Defensive Solidity and a Touch of Fortune
Spurs' defensive frailties had been a concern heading into the game, but they stood firm against a Brentford side that had dominated large spells of possession. The visitors took the lead in chaotic fashion, as Brentford midfielder Vitaly Janelt inadvertently bundled the ball into his own net in the first half.
Despite being second-best for much of the game—evidenced by Brentford’s superior expected goals (xG) tally of 2.29 to Spurs’ 0.75—Tottenham held their shape and frustrated the hosts. Brentford, who have now lost four of their last five home league games by at least a two-goal margin, failed to convert their chances and were ultimately punished.
Sarr Secures the Points
With Brentford pushing forward in search of an equalizer, Spurs sealed the win in the closing stages. Pape Matar Sarr finished a well-worked move to make it 2-0, ensuring a vital three points for the Lilywhites and snapping their recent losing streak.
This win extends Tottenham’s unbeaten record against Brentford under Postecoglou (P4 W3 D1), making the Bees one of only two sides they have faced at least four times without defeat under the Australian, alongside Manchester United (W3 D1).
A Step in the Right Direction for Spurs
Beyond the three points, this result marked key milestones for Spurs. It was their first away win in a London derby since October 2023, when they defeated Crystal Palace 2-1, and the first time they have kept a clean sheet in such a game under Postecoglou, having conceded in all eight prior London derbies.
For Brentford, however, this defeat continues a worrying trend at home. Having lost just four of their previous 23 home league games by a two-goal margin, they have now suffered as many heavy defeats in just their last five matches. Thomas Frank’s side remain in 11th place, while Tottenham climb to 14th as they look to build momentum for the remainder of the season.
