The Seagulls got off to a sensational start in the first half, with Kaoru Mitoma scoring one of the goals of the season. The Japanese winger expertly controlled a long pass from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, darted past Trevoh Chalobah, and fired a low shot into the bottom corner to give Brighton a 1-0 lead.
Brighton doubled their advantage shortly after, thanks to Yasin Ayari Minteh. Found in the box by Danny Welbeck, Minteh evaded a challenge from Marc Cucurella and slotted the ball home from close range. The home side’s dominance was reflected in their 1.7 expected goals during the match.
Despite Chelsea enjoying more possession after the break, they struggled to break down Brighton’s resolute defense. The Seagulls sealed the win with a third goal, once again involving Welbeck and Minteh. Welbeck’s pass found Minteh, whose shot deflected off Chalobah and past goalkeeper Jorgensen for a 3-0 lead.
Chelsea’s struggles continued, as they have now gone five Premier League away games without a win (D2 L3). Their recent form has been underwhelming, with only two wins from their last nine league games. After a strong start to the season, Chelsea will be desperate to reverse their fortunes when they face Aston Villa next weekend.
Brighton, meanwhile, celebrated beating the same opponent twice in a week for the first time as a top-flight club. They’ll look to carry their momentum into their next fixture, a Premier League trip to Southampton.
This victory marks a strong statement from Brighton, whose attacking verve and defensive organization will give them confidence heading into the business end of the season.
