Chelle, a former Malian international, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously coached the Mali senior men’s national team, the Aiglons, since 2022. Under his leadership, Mali showcased remarkable performances, notably reaching the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire. They came close to a semifinal berth but lost 2-1 in extra time to the host nation, Cote d’Ivoire, despite leading until the final minute of regulation time.
The 47-year-old coach also has significant club-level experience, having managed teams such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran. As a player, Chelle had a distinguished career in France, representing clubs like Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. He also earned five international caps for Mali.
Chelle’s appointment comes at a critical time for the Super Eagles, as they gear up for crucial Matchdays 5 and 6 in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in March.
