Arsenal Edge Wolves in Fiery Encounter to Stay in Title Race

Arsenal kept their title hopes alive with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Wolves at Molineux, where two red cards and Riccardo Calafiori's second-half winner stole the headlines. In a game filled with tension and key moments, the Gunners showcased resilience to grind out a crucial win despite playing with 10 men for much of the match.

The match got off to an even start, with both sides creating chances in the first half. Arsenal came close when Kai Havertz’s powerful header was brilliantly saved by Wolves goalkeeper José Sá. However, the game took a major turn on the stroke of half-time when Myles Lewis-Skelly, at just 18 years and 121 days, became the youngest Arsenal player to receive a red card in the Premier League after a reckless challenge.

Down to 10 men, Arsenal appeared vulnerable as Wolves looked to capitalize. Yet, their momentum was halted midway through the second half when João Gomes was shown a second yellow card for a dangerous tackle, leveling the playing field. Minutes later, Arsenal seized their chance, as Riccardo Calafiori fired in the decisive goal, ensuring a vital three points for the Gunners.

Despite Wolves’ best efforts, including chances for Rayan Aït-Nouri and Matheus Cunha, Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya and the defense stood firm to secure their first clean sheet in 10 league games. Wolves registered nine shots with four on target, compared to Arsenal's three shots on target from the same number of attempts. Arsenal also edged the xG battle, 0.99 to Wolves' 0.58.

For Lewis-Skelly, his historic red card places him as the third youngest Premier League player ever to be sent off, behind Wayne Rooney (17 years, 63 days) and Michael Owen (18 years, 117 days). However, Arsenal’s incredible record of winning more Premier League games (38) than they’ve lost (35) when reduced to 10 men remained intact. Wolves, by contrast, suffered yet another defeat when having a player sent off, extending their league-high loss rate in such situations to 75% (21 losses in 28 games).

The result leaves Arsenal six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who defeated Ipswich Town tonight. The Gunners face a critical test against Manchester City next as the title race heats up. Wolves, teetering just above the relegation zone on goal difference, must regroup before hosting Aston Villa in their next fixture.
