The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Zambia Under-17 Women’s National Team for their sensational victory at the 2024 COSAFA Women’s U-17 Championship.

FAZ President Andrew Kamanga expressed immense pride in the team’s achievement, emphasizing how the triumph underscores the significant progress the women’s game in Zambia has made over recent years. “A big congratulations to the girls and the technical bench for winning the COSAFA crown,” Kamanga said in a statement. “The seeds we have been sowing over the years are beginning to bear fruit, and the second phase of the plan is to sustain this growth and take it to the next level.”

This victory is especially sweet as it comes just after the Under-17 girls made an impressive showing at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Their COSAFA success, which saw them demolish Lesotho 15-0 in the final, adds to the momentum of what has been a record-breaking year for Zambia’s national teams.

“This story adds to the incredible year we have had that has seen our national teams’ record success at various levels. The Under-17 girls were at the FIFA World Cup and have now added the COSAFA crown to their success, with the U-20 and Copper Queens emerging champions at COSAFA level,” Kamanga added.

The victory not only highlights the increasing prominence of women’s football in Zambia but also strengthens the foundation for future successes at both regional and international levels.

Kamanga further noted that the success of the women’s teams in 2024 offers a vital springboard for Zambia’s footballing future. "Our Chipolopolo, Copper Queens, Under-20 boys, and Under-17 boys have all qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations, which provides a platform for greater undertakings in 2025,” he said.

In addition to the team’s triumph, individual accolades were awarded to two Zambian players. Mercy Chipasula was named Player of the Tournament, while her teammate, Lovesness Chingwere, earned the Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Top Scorer awards, solidifying the stellar performances from Zambia’s young stars.

Zambia’s 15-0 victory over Lesotho marked the team’s second-ever COSAFA U-17 title and reaffirms the nation’s growing dominance in women’s football within the region. As FAZ continues to invest in nurturing young talent, the 2024 achievements provide a platform to elevate Zambia’s standing in the global football arena.

The Football Association of Zambia, under Kamanga’s leadership, is committed to driving the continued success of both the men’s and women’s national teams, with an eye toward more silverware in the coming years.

This victory by Zambia's U-17 girls at the 2024 COSAFA Championship is a testament to the country's growing prominence in women’s football and an inspiring example of what can be achieved with hard work, determination, and a strong vision for the future of the game.
