Nottingham Forest Stun Villa with Late Drama to Claim Top-Four Spot

Nottingham Forest snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at the City Ground, securing both three crucial points and a coveted spot in the Premier League top four. The game, which had been lackluster for much of the first half, came to life in the second period, culminating in a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Anthony Elanga.

The opening 45 minutes saw little in the way of action, with both teams struggling to break down their opponents. However, Villa's goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was called into action early in the second half, producing a world-class save to deny Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi from close range. Despite Villa's strong defensive shape, it was the visitors who would take the lead shortly after when Jhon Durán powered home a header from a Lucas Digne cross, giving Villa a 1-0 advantage.

But Forest weren't about to give up easily. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo made key substitutions, bringing on fresh legs that turned the game in his side’s favor. Forest had a goal ruled out for offside following a VAR review, but their persistence paid off just minutes later when Willy Boly was on hand to equalize from close range, sending the home crowd into raptures.

As the game neared its conclusion, Villa appeared to tire and struggle to maintain their earlier momentum. With just seconds remaining, Forest struck the decisive blow. Elanga, who had been a threat since his introduction, fired a powerful shot past Martinez to give Forest the lead for the first time in the match. The City Ground erupted as the home side completed a stunning turnaround, securing a vital win.

Nottingham Forest’s performance was backed up by their impressive xG of 1.65, far surpassing Villa’s 0.44, suggesting they were the more dominant side, particularly in the second half. Despite Villa’s initial lead, Unai Emery will have concerns over his team’s inability to maintain control after taking the lead, particularly as they were unable to create further chances after Durán’s header.

The win propels Forest into the Premier League’s top four, while Villa will now face a daunting test next week when they host Manchester City. For Forest, their next challenge is a trip to Brentford, where they will face a side with one of the best home records in the league this season.

It’s a thrilling victory for Forest, who continue to impress under Nuno, while Villa's drop in form after the opening goal raises questions ahead of the busy festive period.
