Girona Ends 2024 with Convincing Win Over Valladolid

Girona FC concluded 2024 on a high note with a commanding 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid on December 20 at Estadi Montilivi. This triumph ended a six-game winless streak across all competitions, propelling Girona to eighth place in LaLiga with 25 points, just two points shy of the European qualification spots.

The match showcased Girona's dominance from the outset. The first goal materialized in the 31st minute when Miguel Gutiérrez's free kick deflected off David López into the top corner. López remarked, "It's not the best goal of my career but at the end of the season it counts."

Before halftime, Girona extended their lead. In the 39th minute, Abel Ruiz headed in a precise cross from Gutiérrez, marking his second assist of the match. The second half saw continued control from Girona, culminating in a third goal in the 81st minute. Substitute Arnaut Danjuma netted his first goal for the club with a well-placed shot, sealing the 3-0 result.

Valladolid, under new coach Diego Cocca, struggled to make an impact, managing only one shot throughout the match. This defeat marks their 12th in 18 league games, leaving them second-bottom with 12 points, four points adrift of safety. Valladolid right-back Lucas Rosa emphasized the need for unity and self-criticism moving forward.

Girona's head coach, Míchel, expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, highlighting their increased aggressiveness and pressure. He stated, "Today the aggressiveness, the pressure was incredible, for me the best of the season." Reflecting on the year, Míchel acknowledged the team's achievements, including a third-place LaLiga finish and their Champions League debut, while also noting areas for improvement. He aims for a top-seven league finish in the upcoming year.

This victory provides Girona with a positive momentum shift as they prepare for the second half of the season, aiming to build on this success and secure a spot in European competitions.
