Bayern Munich Thump Shakhtar 5-1 to Rediscover Champions League Rhythm

Bayern Munich delivered a powerful second-half performance to hammer Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 in Gelsenkirchen, signaling a return to form in the UEFA Champions League. After a tight first half, the visitors took control in the second period, scoring three goals in the final 20 minutes to complete a dominant victory.

Shakhtar started brightly, creating several chances through the likes of Traore, Bondar, Zubkov, Pedrinho, and Eguinaldo. Their attacking efforts produced an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.34, and they had their moments to trouble Bayern’s defense. However, despite these opportunities, the Ukrainian side struggled to match the quality of Bayern’s attack when it mattered most.

Bayern, already 2-1 up at the restart, grew into the game as the half progressed. The visitors generated a staggering 3.18 xG of their own, and their clinical finishing made the difference. With 20 minutes to go, Bayern’s Jeremie Boey was fouled in the box, winning a penalty that Michael Olise calmly converted to give Bayern a 3-1 lead.

It seemed as though the game would end with a comfortable 3-1 scoreline, but Bayern weren’t finished. In the 87th minute, Jamal Musiala pounced on a fortuitous rebound to score from close range and extend Bayern’s advantage. Then, in injury time, Olise sealed his brace with a sensational individual goal, dancing past Shakhtar defenders before firing into the net.

The result was another heavy home defeat for Shakhtar in European competition, following a similar loss to PSV earlier in the group stage. They now find themselves languishing in 27th place in the 36-team Champions League standings. Bayern, on the other hand, move back into the top eight, showcasing their strength and reminding Europe that they can never be underestimated, especially in the latter stages of the tournament.

Shakhtar’s struggles at home continue, while Bayern’s dominant display has propelled them back into contention, providing a timely boost to their European ambitions. With their rhythm restored, the Bavarians will look to carry this momentum into the knockout rounds.
