Super Eagles head coach Austin Eguavoen commended his team for their resilience and determination after Nigeria secured a 1-1 draw against Benin in an AFCON qualifier on November 14. The result ensured Nigeria remains top of their group and confirmed their qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals, ahead of their final group game against Rwanda in Uyo.
“It was a tough game, and I congratulate the players for a spirited display in the second half that earned us the equalizer,” Eguavoen remarked post-match.
The coach highlighted the challenging weather conditions, noting that the downpour during the game created difficulties for both sides. However, he expressed satisfaction with the team’s ability to adapt and achieve the desired outcome.
Victor Osimhen’s late header in the 81st minute salvaged the draw for Nigeria after Mohamed Tijani had given Benin an early lead. The Super Eagles will now shift focus to their final qualifier against Rwanda, a match that holds no bearing on their qualification status but provides an opportunity to fine-tune their preparations for the tournament.
Eguavoen’s comments underline his confidence in the squad as they aim to maintain their competitive edge ahead of the continental showpiece in 2025.
