Edo Queens FC secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, Casablanca, to advance to the semi-finals of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.
Melinda Kgadiete gave Mamelodi Sundowns the lead in the 24th minute, and the South African side looked poised for victory. However, the Nigerian debutants turned the game around in injury time. Emem Peace Essien equalized in the 95th minute, and Mary Mamudu netted the winner in the 101st minute.
The win marks a historic achievement for Edo Queens, becoming the first Nigerian club to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. They topped Group B with seven points, while Mamelodi Sundowns, finishing third, were eliminated with three points.
Edo Queens will face TP Mazembe in the semi-finals on Tuesday, November 19, at 3:00 PM Nigerian time. This thrilling comeback solidifies their status as serious contenders in their maiden appearance.
