In a thrilling encounter at the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth claimed their first-ever Premier League victory over Manchester City, winning 2-1 thanks to a goal in each half. Manager Andoni Iraola’s well-executed game plan saw the Cherries sit back in a low, organized block and pounce on counter-attacking opportunities, frustrating the reigning champions who struggled to break through Bournemouth’s resilient defense.
The hosts opened the scoring early, with Antoine Semenyo finishing clinically after just nine minutes, assisted by Milos Kerkez. This early lead allowed Bournemouth to focus on defending, absorbing City’s pressure throughout the first half. Guardiola's team dominated possession, but could not find a way past Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers, as Bournemouth limited City’s clear-cut chances effectively.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with City pushing forward but lacking a cutting edge in front of goal. Bournemouth, meanwhile, continued to exploit the flanks, troubling City’s defense, particularly Josko Gvardiol and Kyle Walker. Bournemouth doubled their advantage when Evanilson struck, again assisted by the impressive Kerkez, giving the home side a crucial two-goal cushion.
David Brooks nearly extended Bournemouth’s lead, only to see his effort strike the post. This near miss sparked City into action, leading to a frantic final 10 minutes. City finally hit the target in the 80th minute, scoring shortly afterward when Gvardiol headed in to bring them within one goal. The visitors pushed for an equalizer in stoppage time, but Haaland was denied twice in quick succession, as Bournemouth held on for the historic victory.
Despite both teams posting similar expected goals (1.8 for Bournemouth, 1.77 for City), it was Iraola’s side that came away with all three points. Bournemouth now prepare to face Brentford on November 9, while Manchester City will look to rebound against Sporting CP in the Champions League on Tuesday, followed by a Premier League clash with Brighton on Saturday.
