Ajax Defeated 2-0 by Real Sociedad in Basque Country, Drops to Sixth on Europa League Table

Ajax suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to Real Sociedad in their UEFA Europa League encounter on Thursday evening. The match, played in the Basque Country, sees the Dutch side slip to sixth place in the Europa League standings, as their chances of advancing grow increasingly slim.

The first half was a missed opportunity for Francesco Farioli’s men, who created four clear-cut chances but failed to convert. Chuba Akpom, Kian Fitz-Jim, Brian Brobbey, and Christian Rasmussen all had opportunities to break the deadlock, but each failed to find the back of the net. Brobbey's night ended early in the 33rd minute due to injury, with Rasmussen coming on in his place.

Despite dominating possession and creating chances, Ajax could not find the breakthrough. However, they were soon punished in the second half as Real Sociedad seized control of the game.

The Spanish side’s star player, Takefusa Kubo, played a pivotal role in the victory. Kubo provided a perfectly timed assist for Ander Barrenetxea’s opener in the 67th minute. With Ajax struggling to regain momentum, Kubo sealed the win for the hosts, scoring a goal of his own in the 85th minute to make it 2-0.

In the second half, Ajax’s threat on goal was limited to a single attempt. A midfielder's well-placed left-footed shot from outside the penalty area looked promising but lacked the power needed to trouble Real Sociedad’s goalkeeper, bouncing harmlessly back into play.

Match Summary:

  • Real Sociedad 2-0 Ajax
  • Goals:
    • 67' Barrenetxea 1-0
    • 85' Kubo 2-0
