Italy and Belgium Battle to Thrilling 2-2 Draw in UEFA Nations League Showdown

On October 10, 2024, Italy and Belgium faced off in a thrilling UEFA Nations League match at the Stadio Olimpico, which ended in a 2-2 draw. This encounter saw Italy take a commanding lead, only to squander it in dramatic fashion.

Italy struck first within just a minute of kickoff, with Andrea Cambiaso scoring from a well-constructed play involving Federico Dimarco and Mateo Retegui. The Azzurri doubled their advantage in the 25th minute when Retegui capitalized on a rebound from a Cambiaso shot that was parried by Belgium's goalkeeper Koen Casteels.

However, the tide turned just before halftime when Lorenzo Pellegrini received a red card for a reckless tackle on Arthur Theate. This pivotal moment shifted the momentum in Belgium's favor. Shortly after the sending off, Maxim De Cuyper scored in the 42nd minute, converting a well-placed free kick from Leandro Trossard to bring Belgium back into the game.

In the second half, Belgium continued to press their advantage and equalized in the 62nd minute. Trossard, who had been instrumental throughout the match, scored after connecting with a corner kick that was headed back into play by Wout Faes.

Italy had opportunities to regain the lead but ultimately held on for a draw. The match stats reflected Belgium's dominance in possession (62%) and corners (12), while Italy managed to secure only 38% possession and two corners.

This draw leaves Italy at the top of their UEFA Nations League group, while Belgium seeks to build on their performance as they prepare for their next match against France.
