The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially approved the continuation of Coach Augustine Eguavoen as Head Coach of the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches. This decision follows the recommendation from the Federation’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee, announced on Thursday.
Eguavoen, 58, who has led the Nigerian national team on three previous occasions, will continue his tenure as he prepares the Super Eagles for their crucial AFCON qualifying games against Libya, set to take place next month. In his recent stint, Eguavoen guided the three-time African champions to a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic, followed by a scoreless draw against Rwanda in Matchdays 1 and 2 earlier this month.
The current technical team supporting Eguavoen includes assistant coaches Fidelis Ilechukwu, Daniel Ogunmodede, goalkeeper coach Olatunji Baruwa, and physical trainer Tomaz Zorec. This group will also oversee the Super Eagles B team as they gear up for the qualifying campaign for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), a tournament reserved for home-based players.
In addition to the decisions regarding the men's national teams, the NFF's Executive Committee also addressed changes within the Super Falcons. Following the departure of former coach Randy Waldrum, the Committee approved Coach Justin Madugu to temporarily take charge of the Super Falcons, pending the appointment of a permanent head coach. Madugu will work with the current technical staff as the Super Falcons prepare for their next major tournament, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place in Morocco in the summer of 2025.
With these appointments, the NFF is hopeful that both the Super Eagles and Super Falcons will be well-positioned to excel in their respective continental competitions.
