In a thrilling encounter at the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, Japan's U20 women’s team edged out Nigeria's Falconets with a 2-1 victory, securing their place in the quarterfinals.
The match, held in front of a captivated audience, saw Japan’s team take the lead with a well-placed goal from Matsunaga in the 33rd minute. Japan's dominance continued as Hijikata doubled their advantage in the 65th minute, putting the Falconets on the back foot.
Despite Nigeria’s spirited effort to claw back into the game, it was only in the dying moments that they managed to score. Olushola’s goal in the 90+1 minute came too late to alter the outcome, and Nigeria’s U20 squad bowed out of the tournament after a hard-fought battle.
Japan’s victory means they advance to the quarterfinals, while Nigeria’s journey in the tournament comes to a heartbreaking end. The Falconets, who showed great promise throughout the competition, will have to regroup and look forward to future opportunities.
Congratulations to Japan for their progression, and a commendable performance by Nigeria's U20 team. Best of luck to both teams as the tournament continues.
