Portugal Secures Late Victory Over Czechia in Euro 2024 Opener

Portugal claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory over Czechia in their Euro 2024 Group F opener at Red Bull Arena, Leipzig, thanks to a stoppage-time winner by substitute Francisco Conceicao.

The match saw a goalless first half, marking the only such instance in the tournament so far. Czechia took the lead just after the hour mark through a superb strike by Provod, putting Portugal on the back foot. However, Portugal responded swiftly as an own goal by Hranac leveled the score shortly after.

Late in the game, Portugal thought they had taken the lead when Diogo Jota found the net, but VAR ruled it out for an offside by Cristiano Ronaldo, who became the first player to participate in six European Championships.

In the dying moments of the match, Portugal found their breakthrough when substitutes Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceicao combined, with Neto providing the assist for Conceicao's decisive goal, breaking Czech hearts and securing all three points for Portugal.

Despite Czechia's determined performance, which ultimately went unrewarded, they now face the challenge of regrouping before their next encounter against Georgia. Meanwhile, Portugal looks ahead to a crucial clash against Turkey in Dortmund, knowing that another point should be sufficient to advance to the knockout stage.
