Nigeria Suffers Defeat to Benin Republic in FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers

In a disappointing outcome for the Super Eagles, Nigeria faced a 2-1 defeat against Benin Republic at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. Despite initially taking the lead with a goal from Raphael Onyedika in the 27th minute, Nigeria couldn't maintain their advantage as Benin fought back strongly.

Goals from Jodel Dossou and Steve Mounie turned the tide in favor of Benin, securing them a crucial victory in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers. This loss adds to Nigeria's challenges in the qualifiers, as they are yet to secure a win after four matches.

Gernot Rohr, the manager, oversaw a tactical battle against his former team, but ultimately, the Super Eagles couldn't secure the desired result. With this defeat, Nigeria finds themselves in a challenging position in Group C, currently sitting in 5th place, just above Zimbabwe, who still have a game in hand.

As Nigeria regroups and prepares for upcoming matches, they will need to address their performance to enhance their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
