Qatar 2022: Japan shocks Spain as Germany fails to reach round 16

Spain took the lead in the first half through Morata only for Japan to mount a dramatic comeback in the second half following goals from Doan and Tanaka.

That coupled with the fact that Germany beat Costa Rica in the group's other game, means that Japan go through as group winners while Spain go through as runner up.

Japan face Croatia in the Round of 16 this Monday with Spain locking horns with Morocco the following day.

In the other games, Germany are out of the world cup despite coming from behind to beat Costa Rica. Thanks to a brace from substitute Havertz.

Germany have been eliminated from the group stages at consecutive world cups (also 2018), after they had progressed from the first round group stage in each of their 16 previous such apperances at the tournament.
