POST-MATCH REPORT
Match Report: Rivers United 3-0 Niger Tornadoes
WHAT HAPPENED
Rivers United bounced back to winning ways with a comprehensive performance that saw off Niger Tornadoes at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
The 'Pride of Rivers' were impressive all afternoon, as the league's leading scorer Ishaq Rafiu Kayode opened the scoring in the 30th minute (his 13th goal of the season) after a sleek move from his side with midfield maestro Morice Chukwu the provider.
Nyima Nwagua then doubled his side’s lead three minutes later with a tap in from close range coming from Nelson Esor's well tailored pass.
A thoroughly dominant performance was capped up with a goal from Ivorian international Konan Ruffin in the second half as he finished off a Nelson Esor assist after a beautiful counter-attacking move to seal the victory.
The Stanley Eguma tutored side created a host of chances throughout the game, with Morice Chukwu, Ishaq Rafiu Kayode and Solomon Okuruket all forcing saves from Lucky Abdullahi in goal for Niger Tornadoes.
The victory came at the right time for Rivers United, who needed a bounce-back, after suffering only their second defeat of the season to Sunshine Stars on matchday 24 in Akure.
For the Ikon Allah side, Coach Abubakar Bala handed starting spot to two former Dolphins FC players Lukman Mohammed and Ifeanyi Okoye. The visitors did not look like scoring for most of the game, and were restricted to long-range efforts.
WHAT IT MEANS
Rivers United strengthened their lead on top of the NPFL log with 55 points from 25 matches. 4 points ahead of 2nd placed Plateau United.
WHAT'S NEXT
Rivers United will be guest to Kwara United on matchday 26.
