Super Eagles Crash Out of 2021 AFCON after Tunisia Defeat

By Emmanuel Oladele - The Super Eagles of Nigeria have crashed out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) currently going on in Cameroon, following a 1-0 loss to Tunisia in the Round of 16 on Sunday.

Youssef Msakni 47th minute strike in the second half ended Nigeria's dream of lifting the fourth AFCON title. The Tunisian forward took advantage of Super Eagles' poor defending, and a bad goalkeeping from Nigeria's Maduka Okoye to score from a long range, the only goal of the game.

The Augustine Eguavoen led side had their woes compounded in the 66th minute when second half substitute Alex Iwobi was red carded for a bad tackle barely three minutes into the game, leaving Nigeria with 10 men to play the Carthage Eagles who were 1-0 up.

The Super Eagles are out of the competition, while Tunisia will play Burkina Faso who defeated Gabon by 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the regular time. The game comes up on Saturday 29th January, 20:00 Nigerian Time (+1 GMT).

Nigeria next competitive game will be against Ghana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier Play-off round, which hold between March 23-29, 2022.
