Nigeria beat Liberia in Matchday 5 to keep World Cup hope alive

By Emmanuel Oladele - The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday defeated Liberia by 2-0 in a Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier matchday 5 at Grand Stade de Tangier, Morocco.

Nigeria got the first goal from the spot in the 15th minute of the first half, after Kelechi Iheanacho was brought down in Liberia area, Victor Osimhen made no mistake in sending the Liberia goalkeeper Boison Wynney to a wrong direction and giving Nigeria a early lead in the game. The first half ended 1-0 in favour of the Super Eagles.

The second half produced no goal until 90+4' when Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen was fouled by the Liberia goalkeeper Boison Wynney in his area once again, the referee directly pointed to the spot for Nigeria's second spot kick, it was substitute Ahmed Musa who once against sent Boison Wynney to another wrong direction to give Nigeria the second goal.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were not convincing enough in the game as the midfield and the defence were not solid, a lot of wrong passes and poor defending, but were lucking not to have conceded and to have gotten two penalties that won the game for the Gernot Rohr led side.

On the other hand, Cape Verde beat Central African Republic by 2-1 in another group C game. Nigeria now top group C with 12 points as Cape Verde on 10 points continues to mount pressure on Nigeria. See the Group C log below;

Nigeria need at least a draw against Cape Verde in Lagos on Tuesday to make it to the final round of the qualifier, but a win for Cape Verde in Lagos will end Super Eagles' dream of playing in Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

At the end of the game, it's Liberia 0-2 Nigeria, so it ended in World Cup Qualifier matchday 5 in Tangier, Morocco.
