A Football Kenya Federation (FKF) match official was murdered this weekend after a fan hit him for making a controversial decision during a match that was held at Gesabakwa, Kisii County.
John Chang'aa Okwoyo, who is a retired police officer, was officiating at the Mashinani soccer competition and the game between Ichuni Youth and Aspire FC didn't finish well.
Mr Okwoyo was the first assistant referee when the incident happened as it was contradiction over the cause of the aggression that led to the assault.
A journalist was reported to have said that the referee had entered into an argument with the fan after a player of his favourite team was injured before the two started a physical fight.
He is a popular FIFA Referee who is retired but continue to officiate at the grassroot despite his age with passion as his utmost priority.
Football Federation of Kenya secretary general Mr. Evans Mageka also confirmed the eventuality on Saturday, intimating that the rogue fan hit the referee for allegedly flagging a wrong foul.
Mageka stated that the tough fan emerged from the spectators before attacking the referee with a flying kick that made him faint while in serious pain.
He further revealed that the referee was rushed to the nearest subcounty hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
No arrest has been made but Kenya police are reportedly on the lookout for the supporter who took laws into his hands.
