FIFA World Cup Legend is Dead

By Olamide Oyetunji - The Senegalese football family, Confederation of African Football and the Federation de International Football Association has been thrown into morning as ex-Senegalese football star Papa Bouba Diop has reportedly died.

The terrific hardworking midfielder was confirmed to have died at the youthful age of 42 after enduring a long term illness.

Bouba Diop is widely remembered for scoring the only goal that helped the Teranga Lions stun the current world champions France at the 2002 edition of the FIFA World Cup.

France were the defending world champions in that tournament held in South Korea and Japan but the first timers pulled what is considered one of the biggest shocks in the history of football.

The iconic Senegalese team ended their journey as quarterfinalist with Diop going ahead to score twice for his team in their 3-3 group draw against Uruguay.

Bouba Diop and his team fairytale run was ended by Turkey in the last eight as he went further to accumulate 65 appearance for the West African country during his time with the national team and featured at four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
