By Edikan Akpan - Speaking at a press conference Lewis says his contract talks with Mercedes are on hold because it doesn’t feel right to sign a new deal when the pandemic has cost so many people their jobs.
However Hamilton, who approximately earns an estimated $40 million per year at Mercedes, said he does not feel comfortable to pen a new deal under the current circumstances of mass job losses. Meanwhile Mercedes who are offering Hamilton a more lucrative and bumper contract has layoff thousands of its staff due to economic meltdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic that has hit the manufacturing and automobile industry hard.
“Ultimately, it just doesn’t feel like the right time to sit – when you think about so many people in the world that have lost their jobs, people that are unemployed – to then sit and negotiate a big contract,” he said on Thursday at FIA press conference at Silverstone.
