Nigerians spend over N730bn on sports betting annually

Recent research shows that Nigerians spend over N730 billion on sports betting every year. Statistics has it that more than 60 million Nigerian sports betting pundits spends at least 3,000 naira on sports betting daily. The data also shows that at least N2 billion naira is spent on sports betting daily across Nigeria.

In Nigeria today, we have over 50 betting sites. It is believed by many that sports betting will help to generate quick and easy income, but one would wonder how many people are making quick income via sports betting.

Nigeria youths seems to have also landed in big trouble with the introduction of Sports Betting in Nigeria, because of the ways they patronise this betting shops and the level of their resources allocated to this game.

Sports Betting is recommended for People above 18 years of age but today one would find a little boy between the age of 10-15 patronising a sports betting shop.

THE BIG QUESTIONS

• Could Sports betting in Nigeria be another way to extort the poor masses?

• Should sports betting be legalized in Nigeria?

• Should this continue?
