Man of the Match Luther Singh was the hero for South Africa’s Under-20 side in their Afcon U-20 opener on Monday night, netting three goals in their 3-1 win over Cameroon.
Cameroon started the brighter of the two sides, forcing goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto into a fine save early on before taking the lead through Eric Ayuk just 15 minutes in.
Yet the South African juniors hit straight back, as Braga B forward Singh curled in a superb free-kick to restore parity.
Another set-piece opportunity then gave the South Africans the lead after Sibongakonke Mbatha was brought down in the box, with Singh stepping up and slotting home as his side headed into the break 2-1 up. The talented attacker wasn’t done yet as just 12 minutes into the second half Amajita broke at pace, Singh showing a fine burst of speed before cutting inside, eliminating the on-rushing keeper and defenders to show fine composure in front of goal as he netted a well-deserved third to bag his hat-trick. Try as they might, Cameroon could not break down the South African defence again, as Thabo Senong’s charges held on to the 3-1 win, taking maximum points from their tournament opener.
The win sees Amajita top group B following rivals Senegal and Sudan’s 1-1 draw earlier in the day.
